- California Military Museum

militia and military history from pre-statehood to contemporary times. The museum contains
more that 30,000 military papers, documents and memorabilia. Included is a gift shop. Open
Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission $2.25, seniors $1.50, children ages 5
to 17 $1.
- Calif. Exposition & State Fair (Cal Expo)

other events throughout the year. 700 acres, 260,000 square feet of exhibit facilities,
Expo Sports Satellite, Wagering Facility, Waterworld USA, Paradise Island Family Fun

- California State Indian Museum

the rich and diverse culture of the California Indian people. - WA
- California State Railroad Museum

(office). The Transcontinental and Sacramento Valley Railroads began in Old Sacramento.
The 100,000-sq. foot museum is the largest interpretive museum of its kind in North
America, displaying 21 restored locomotives, cars and 46 exhibits. Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Adults $5; children 6 to 12 $2, under 6 free. Also same ticket admittance to Central
Pacific Passenger and Depot Station on Front Street. A reconstruction of the depot built
in 1876, the station depicts the bustling activities of train travel in the mid-1800s.
Steam train rides are available every weekend from April through Labor Day from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m.; October through December (and selected holidays), the first weekend of the month
from noon to 3 p.m. Steam ride only: adults $5, youths 6 to 12 $2, 5 and under free. - WA
- California Vietnam Veterans Memorial
15th Street and Capitol Avenue, at the east end of State Capitol Park. A $2.5 million
project established by law and built entirely by donations. Its 22 shiny black granite
panels memorialize the 5,822 names of California's dead and missing. The exquisite
full-relief bronze figures depict the realities of daily life during that conflict. - WA
- Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament
11th and K streets, 95814; 444-3070. The 217-foot tower was built in 1889. Its prominent
architectural design comes from 19th century Paris and the stained glass is from Austria.
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Catholic masses held daily. Please call for Vigil Mass,

- Historic City Cemetery
10th Street and Broadway; 264-5621. Established in 1849, the cemetery is the last resting
place for over 20,000 early Sacramentans, including John A. Sutter Jr., Edwin and Margaret
Crocker, and Mark Hopkins. Open daily 7 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Free guided tours Saturday and
Sunday, 10 a.m., on a regular basis May through September, on a limited basis October

east of Sacramento. Museums include the original Powerhouse, the Folsom History Museum at
the Wells Fargo building and the Ashland Station railroad depot. Nearby Folsom Lake is one
of the state's largest. The old town section of Folsom features 150 shops of artisans,
antiquaries and more than a score of restaurants.

- B.F. Hastings Building

historic "Hastings" opened as a bank. Today it is a museum housing
communications and transportation artifacts including the Pony Express, a reconstructed

run on horseback to St. Joseph, Mo., in ten days or less. In October 1861, the completion
of Western Union's Transcontinental telegraph put the "Express" out of business.

- Sacramento Zoo

Sacramento Zoo has gathered national recognition for its rare cats, primate and bird
collection. Lake Victoria, the zoo's newest exhibit, is a 200,000 gallon freshwater lake
providing a natural breeding habitat for crested screamers, black-necked swans and
flamingos. Over one-quarter of the species exhibited at the Sacramento Zoo are considered
endangered. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Christmas Day. Admission is $4 for
adults (13 and older); $2.50 for children (ages 3-12); children under 3 are admitted free.

- Leland Stanford Mansion

reservations). The 140 year-old home of former California governor, senator and railroad
baron Leland Stanford is soon to be restored by the California Department of Parks and
Recreation. Pre-restoration tours focus on the archaeological search for clues to the
house's past and the upcoming re-creation of its 19th century splendor. Call to confirm

- Sutter's Fort State Historic Park

Sutter in 1839. Self-guided tours with audio-wands explain the exhibit rooms, which
